THE
RESUME
·
A resume
contributes to an employer’s first impression of you. It is their first point
of contact with you and will generally be used to determine if you will get an
interview.
·
It is important
not to lie on a resume, as this will often be uncovered during the interview.
·
Read over your
resume before the interview and be prepared to answer questions about it during
the interview.
INTERVIEW
PREPARATION
- Typical
interview questions revolve around common themes. Listing some of your
personal characteristics before an interview will help you realise what you
have to offer a prospective employer. This
will also help with the pressure of the interview, as you don’t need to
think on the spot. Consider your:
- Strengths
and weaknesses
- Abilities
- Past
Employment
- Goals
(Short, Medium and Long Term)
- Leadership
and Team skills
- Communication
skills
- Research
the job you are applying for. This shows the interviewer that you are keen
and that it is the right job for you. Know:
- What
the job involves
- Who
you are working for
- General
information on the company
- Hours
required
- Read
through the job description thoroughly. Think about what they are looking
for and what you have to offer them.
- Organise transport to the
Interview well in advance. It is important to be on time. If you are late to
an interview, an employer will assume you will be late to work too.
- Often an interview will
end with the interviewer asking “Do you have any questions for me?” It
is good to have a question prepared to show that you are keen. You can also
demonstrate your knowledge of the job or company.
For
example: “Yes, I do, I was reading on you website that the company
……….., would you be able to explain that further to me?” This shows you
have researched the company and are interested in it.
